Taste of Ukraine in New Zealand: Sharing Culture Through Food and Fundraising. Bringing Ukrainian Flavours to Kiwi Communities

Taste of Ukraine in New Zealand is a dedicated volunteer group that has been bringing the rich culinary traditions of Ukraine to communities across Auckland since 2022, while raising vital funds to support humanitarian efforts in their homeland. Through markets, food events, and cultural showcases, this grassroots initiative combines the power of traditional Ukrainian cuisine with meaningful community engagement.

A Mission Built on Heritage and Hope

Operating primarily through Auckland markets, including regular appearances at the Britomart Saturday Market, Taste of Ukraine serves as both a cultural ambassador and a fundraising platform. The volunteer-run organisation allows New Zealanders to experience authentic Ukrainian dishes while directly contributing to humanitarian aid for those affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The People Behind the Scenes

The initiative draws on the skills and passion of Ukrainian-born New Zealanders who have made Aotearoa their home. Led by community organisers these volunteers bring authentic recipes and cooking techniques that have been preserved through generations. Many have family members still in Ukraine, adding personal urgency to their fundraising efforts.

Where to Find Them and How You  Can Help

Taste of Ukraine regularly appears at:

  • Britomart Saturday Market – Auckland's premier weekend market. Simply come, buy delicious food, say "Pryvit" or "Slava Ukraine" and each of your dollar spent will go for help in Ukraine.

Send Help in Container to Ukraine: Help wounded Ukrainians to live their lives

TFor more than three years, Ukrainians have been fighting for their very survival. Homes, schools, and hospitals continue to be bombed. Thousands have been injured and urgently need support to rebuild their lives. Medical equipment remains in critically short supply.

Thanks to the generosity of people from every corner of New Zealand, this volunteer-led “container project” has achieved extraordinary results. Over the past three years, six containers of aid have already been delivered to Ukraine. The seventh is currently en route and due to arrive in June, and the eighth container is now being prepared for departure from Christchurch. This is a remarkable nationwide effort powered entirely by volunteers who care deeply about helping those affected by the war.

Ukrainians are incredibly grateful for the medical equipment provided by Kiwis — including wheelchairs, hospital beds, walking frames, crutches, catheters, dressings, wound drains, adult diapers, and many other essentials. New Zealand-made merino thermals have also been supplied to frontline defenders. Your generous donations of clothing and children’s toys have brought comfort and warmth to displaced families.

The Ukrainian Association of New Zealand is reaching out again for your support. Your donation will help cover the shipping and logistics costs needed to send these containers from New Zealand to Ukraine.

Once the aid arrives, a trusted team of volunteers in Ukraine ensures that every item reaches the people who need it most. Your support genuinely changes lives.

About UANZ (Northern Regions)

Founded in 2007, UANZ is a community-based, non-profit organisation supported by a strong network of volunteers. We collect, pack, store, and transport donated goods, and manage the compliance and paperwork required for international container shipments.

Use of Funds

All donations will go toward:

  • Covering the cost of shipping containers from New Zealand to Ukraine

  • Purchasing merino thermal underwear from a local NZ manufacturer
This is an ongoing humanitarian project, and more than one container will continue to be sent as long as support allows.
