Experience a moving event for Ukraine Defenders Day featuring a photo exhibition "Light in the Darkness of War,"  by Senior Lieutenant Oksana Chorna and the Auckland premiere of the acclaimed film "Soldier" by director Danyl Dedkov.

Held on October 4, 2025, at St Heliers Church & Community Centre, this evening honours the courage and sacrifice of Ukrainian defenders. See striking photography from the front lines and witness a powerful drama inspired by their real stories, offering insight into the resilience and humanity of those facing conflict.

"Soldier" is a psychological drama with mystical elements, inspired by Oleksiy Rozumov’s story "93%". The film follows a wounded Ukrainian soldier (Pavlo Shpegun), who discovers supernatural power to cross between the worlds of the living and the dead after losing his memory. Rather than focusing solely on frontline events, the story explores the lasting trauma soldiers endure and highlights the urgent need for compassion. Premiered in December 2024, "Soldier" has won major international awards, been featured at European cultural projects and festivals, and its evocative soundtrack was recognised as one of the year’s best. Dedicated to Ukraine’s defenders, the film is a powerful tribute to their sacrifice and resilience.

Senior Lieutenant Oksana Chorna, Head of Communications for the 23rd Mechanised Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, returned from Oman at the outbreak of full-scale war. With a background as a university economics professor, she volunteered as a combat medic, evacuating the wounded and serving on the front lines in pivotal battles, including Lysychansk, Kherson, and Bakhmut. Her powerful photography documents the human stories and daily realities of Ukrainian defenders, offering a rare window into their sacrifices and resilience.

All proceeds will be sent to Ukraine.
